Nexx 3020 Basic MiniPwner

Print

The Nexx 3020 has some aspects that make it a good MiniPwner platform:

  • It has 8 Meg of flash, enough room for basic packages like fdisk and netcat
  • It has two ethernet ports, so it can be used as an in-line sniffer, among other things
Basic Build Instructions as follows:
  1. Download the OpenWrt firmware http://downloads.openwrt.org/chaos_calmer/15.05/ramips/mt7620/openwrt-15.05-ramips-mt7620-wt3020-8M-squashfs-factory.bin
  2. Connect your computer to the router. Your computer should get a dhcp address from the router
  3. Navigate to http://192.168.8.1 on the router (the third octet may be different, check your DHCP address). You will get the NExx login screen. Login as admin/admin
  4. Click on "Advanced" in the upper right
  5. Click on "System Tools"
  6. Click "Upgrade Firmware"
  7. Browse to the openwrt-15.05-ramips-mt7620-wt3020-8M-squashfs-factory.bin you downloaded
  8. If you get an error try renaming the file to a shorter name with no special characters and try again
  9. The router should reboot itself after the firmware application is done
  10. Now set your laptops ethernet interface to 192.168.1.111 (or something else in the 192.168.1.x range except 1.1)
  11. Telnet to 192.168.1.1.  You should see the Openwrt terminal interface
  12. Format a USB thumb drive so that it has a swap partition and an ext3 or ext4 partition
  13. Follow the instructions at https://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/extroot to mount the USB drive and pivot the OpenWrt root to it.
  14. Install additional packages (like tcpdump and netcat) using opkg install <packagename>
